An accomplished listee, Mr. Carvell celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. For more than 35 years, Mr. Carvell excelled in the field of broadcasting, culminating in his most recent roles as assistant professor, chairman of the Department of Radio and Television, and director of broadcasting at Arkansas State University from 1988 to 2008, where he also served as instructor of radio and television from 1972 to 1988. Earlier in his career, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served as captain in the United States and Vietnam between 1967 and 1971 before transferring to Station KASU-FM in Jonesboro, Arkansas, as news director, operations manager and station manager. In a career filled with highlights, he is especially proud of the success his students have achieved. Additionally, he recalls fondly his experiences in Vietnam, where he volunteered as a squadron civic action officer working with an orphanage.
An expert in his field, Mr. Carvell holds a Bachelor of Science in radio journalism from Arkansas State University and a Master of Science in radio and television from the University of Illinois. To remain abreast of changes in the field, he maintains affiliation with the Broadcast Education Association, the Arkansas School Boards Association, where he previously served as president, and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. In his spare time, he contributes to his community through the Cornerstone United Methodist Church, the Boy Scouts of America, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, he wrote and produced a number of programs for the Indian Sports Network, East Arkansas Cablevision, Arkansas Educational TV Network, Voice of America and National Public Radio.
In light of his professional experience, Mr. Carvell earned a plethora of grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and numerous other agencies between 1976 and 1988. Additionally, he received the Dr. Daniel L. Pilkinton Award for Outstanding Service to Public Education from the Arkansas School Boards Association in 1994. Looking toward the future, Mr. Carvell intends to continue enjoying his retirement.
