Dr. McHargue has been a research professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville since 2013. An expert in nuclear materials and the study of energetic irons and interactions with solids, he was notably one of the first to serve a joint appointment as a professor. During his tenure, he was the director of the Center of Materials Processing from 1991 to 2012 and a professor of materials science and engineering between 1991 and 2018. In addition to his full-time appointments at the University of Tennessee, Dr. McHargue has been an adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, since 1988.
Before entering academia, Dr. McHargue held several roles at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for close to 40 years between 1953 and 1990, including as a senior research staff member and program manager for materials sciences. Located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the laboratory is an American multiprogram science and technology national laboratory sponsored by the United States Department of Energy. He was also an instructor at his alma mater, the University of Kentucky, in Lexington from 1949 to 1953. During his career, Dr. McHargue has authored and co-authored numerous articles in scholarly journals and has served as an editor for eight books.
Dr. McHargue is a member and former board of directors of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society. He also remains a life member of Optimist International and an honorary member of the Order of Engineers in Portugal. A longtime member of the Materials Research Society, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi, Dr. McHargue is an elected fellow of the Metallurgy and Materials Society, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, and the American Society for Metals International.
Named to the University of Tennessee Hall of Fame in 2018, Dr. McHargue was also the recipient of a Ferris Award from the Tickle College of Engineering in 2010. He received a Distinguished Service Award from The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society in 2001 and was named to the University of Kentucky Engineering Hall of Distinction in 1995. In light of all his accomplishments, Dr. McHargue has been cited in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
Pursuing an education at the University of Kentucky, Dr. McHargue received a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering in 1949, a Master of Science in 1951 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1953. Prior to embarking on his studies, he served in the infantry in the United States Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Born in Kentucky to parents John David McHargue and Virginia Thomas, Dr. McHargue later married his wife, Betty, in 1960 and is the proud father of three children.
