Dr. Finney is a distinguished professor emeritus at California State University, Long Beach. Joining the faculty in 1977, his career included a tenured position in the department of film and electronic arts until 2000. During his years on campus, he also taught and chaired the department of radio-television-film. Additionally, Mr. Finney held teaching positions at the University of Southern California, James Madison University, Memphis State University, the Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati, and taught and served as dean of the Department of Mass Communications at Shaw University, where he was instrumental in developing the department. Prior to his faculty positions, Dr. Finney was a personnel director for Radio Corporation of America between 1961 and 1964.
Today, Dr. Finney plays an active role in his community as the commissioner and chairman of the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission in Long Beach. Some of the duties of the commission include facilitating the existing and proposed programs for the elderly, making recommendations to senior citizen service agencies on various matters and assembling information on both problems and solutions of the elder community through all available means necessary, including public hearings.
A consultant in his field for many years, Dr. Finney also edited Feedback magazine from 1976 to 1986. He produced a radio show called "Encounter: Public Policy" between 1974 and 1977 and two television programs, "Town Hall" and "Face to Face," between 1973 and 1977. Highly educated, Dr. Finney acquired a Bachelor of Arts from Marietta College, followed by a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the Ohio State University. He also devoted 31 years to the military, retiring in 1988 as captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
Dr. Finney served as director of the Museum of Broadcast Communications and was on the board of directors of the Broadcast Education Association and Station KOCE-TV and KLON-FM in California. He is a member of the Broadcast Education Association, where he once served on the organization's 30-year committee board of directors. He is also a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Association for Communication Administration, the American Federation of Musicians and the Broadcasters Foundation of America. Furthermore, Dr. Finney is a lifetime member of the Naval Reserve Association and the National Eagle Scout Association.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Finney acquired several grants from the U.S. Office of Education and the Virginia Council on Humanities between 1967 and 1977. He was also named a California State Outstanding Professor in 1993. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been included in the first through third editions of Who's Who in Entertainment. In retirement, Dr. Finney remains active locally as a musician bandleader of the Scarlett and the Dr. Bob Finney Jazz Group. Established in 2003, he plays the saxophone.
