After accruing 35 years of experience in the field of architecture, Ms. Johannes-Marshall retired from her position as chief of the architectural section for Bonneville Power Administration in 1994. Growing up, she drew inspiration from her mother, a commercial artist who kept their home flush with drawings and books on art. As she grew older and attended high school, she became fascinated with mathematics and physics as well – in combining these interests with art, architecture seemed like the natural destination for her professional ambitions. Ms. Johannes-Marshall graduated from the Budapest University of Technology in 1956 with a Bachelor of Architecture, and subsequently immigrated to the United States the following year.
Within a few short years, Ms. Johannes-Marshall accepted a position with Fisher, Davis and Sudler Associates in Denver as an architectural draftswoman, charged with drawing up plans for new construction projects. She continued her career, occupying similar roles for several other firms in the area of Denver, and soon joined the staff of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in 1965. Her design work for the bureau was among the many highlights of her professional journey. In recognition of her outstanding ability in the industry, Ms. Johannes-Marshall was appointed to serve the Bonneville Power Administration as head of their architectural section in 1979, a position she maintained for 15 years.
Possessing a keen sense of civic responsibility, Ms. Johannes-Marshall served as a member of the architectural committee for the Home Owners Association of West Linn, Oregon – the previous year, she had won first prize in an architectural competition hosted in that city. Happily married to her husband, Robert, Ms. Marshall has one son, Erik, through whom she has welcomed two grandchildren into her immediate family.
