Mr. Venters was inducted into the North Carolina Broadcast Hall of Fame.
WILMINGTON, NC, June 13, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Carl Vernon Venters Jr. with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Venters celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Venters began his career in broadcast management while pursuing his Bachelor of Arts at the University of North Carolina, when he was appointed to run the university's FM radio station until his graduation in 1955. Upon leaving academia, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Ultimately rising to the rank of major before concluded his active duty after four years of service, he resumed his broadcasting career and worked for a PBS television station in Chapel Hill, NC, as a program director. He garnered additional expertise in his craft with the aforementioned station for several years, but never forgot his passion for radio, eventually purchasing his own station, Farmville Broadcasting Co., in 1960.
After managing Farmville Broadcasting for more than ten years, Mr. Venters accepted his next position as president of Durham Life Broadcasting Inc. in 1972 in Raleigh, NC. He soon decided to chart a different course for the company, recruiting a program consultant from Detroit to help change the format of the company's FM station, which had previously only played classical music, to play rock and roll. This would encompass groups like the Who, Pink Floyd, and the Doors, whose music had previously only been available through in-store album purchases. Despite encountering some initial pushback from listeners, the decision paid dividends for Mr. Venter's company, catapulting their FM station to second place in the charts within weeks. Observing their success, other stations rushed to copy the format, and soon, album-oriented rock broadcasting spread throughout the United States.
Upon concluding his successful leadership of Durham Life Broadcasting in 1982, Mr. Venters subsequently owned and operated 13 more radio stations throughout the next two decades, including Voyager Communications, Wilmington Broadcasting LLC, and Ocean Broadcasting. Having excelled for 60 years in radio, he finally retired in 2015. By this time, Mr. Venters had accrued numerous accolades for his pioneering spirit, such as induction into the North Carolina Broadcast Hall of Fame, the Farmville Man of the Year Award in 1972, and the 1983 Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters, of which he is a member. He is also affiliated with such prestigious organizations as president of the Raleigh Sales and Marketing Association, the Broadcast Pioneers, and Rotary International. Along with his wife, Linda, he is the proud parent of four children, and has welcomed eight grandchildren into his immediate family. He is retired and lives in Wilmington, NC.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Mr. Venters has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
