Initially planning to pursue a career in physics education, Dr. Claridge attended to his undergraduate studies at Walla Walla College, where he received a Bachelor of Science in engineering physics in 1964. Enrolling at Stanford University soon thereafter, he earned a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1966 and 1976, respectively. He commenced his career as a science fellow in the Office of Technology Assessment with the United States Congress in 1976, holding the position until 1977, before escalating to member of the staff and project director of the office between 1977 and 1980. Relocating from Washington, D.C., to Golden, Colorado, he served Solar Energy Research Institute as a research group manager for the following two years.
Subsequently, Dr. Claridge delved into academia at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he first acted as an associate professor of civil and architectural engineering from 1982 to 1986. From 1986 to 1995, he assumed the role of associate professor of mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University. Since 1995, he has remained a professor of mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University, also serving as a Leland Jordan Professor until 2018. Alongside his primary career responsibilities, Dr. Claridge has been a consultant for various organizations since 1980 and has served Texas A&M University as director of the Energy Systems Laboratory since 2007.
Equally passionate about civic involvement, Dr. Claridge has sat on the board of directors of the interdenominational Brazos Valley Emmaus Community, his local homeowners association, and the Southwest Partnership for Energy Efficiency as a Resource. To share his breadth of knowledge with the scientific community, he has contributed a myriad of articles to professional journals, published three books, and was the deputy editor of the International Journal of Energy Research from 1988 to 1997. In addition, he remains current with developments in his field through affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASHRAE, and the American Solar Energy Society.
As a testament to his longevity in the industry, Dr. Claridge has received numerous research grants and was named an honorary international member of the Society of Heating and Air Conditioning and Sanitary Engineers of Japan. A former Congressional Science Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he won three Best Paper Awards and an Appreciation Award. In 1995, he was selected for inclusion in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
