Lt. Col. Jaacks enlisted in the Air Force in 1950. He was subsequently commissioned a second Lieutenant and advanced through the grades to Lieutenant Colonel. From 1952 to 1955 he served as a navigator fighter - interceptor officer at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska, later on becoming a squadron operations officer and interceptor pilot at Youngstown Air Force Base between 1957 and 1960. He was assigned serve with the Dutch Air Force to Holland where he served as an interceptor pilot and the chief of avionics and aircraft maintenance at Soesterberg Air Force Base from 1962 to 1965. In 1967, Lt. Col. Jaacks returned to the United States, where he was the assigned to the Space Launch Vehicles Directorate of the Space and Missile Systems Center at the Los Angeles AFB until his retirement in 1973.
As registered professional engineer and commercial pilot, Lt. Col. Jaacks was also an F18 Radar Integrated Logistics Systems program manager at the Hughes Aircraft Co. in El Segundo, California. Civically involved as well, he was the chairman of the Southwest Exploring Division and a Vice President of the Los Angeles Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He is currently is the President of Christ Lutheran Church and School and past president of the Palos Verdes Center for the Performing Arts. Lt. Col. Jaacks also served as the President of the Palos Verdes Sunset Rotary Club of and was also a Rotary assistant district governor.
While serving in the United States Air Force, Lt. Col. Jaacks pursued formal education at various universities across the United States. He first attended the University of Illinois, he receiving a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Administration in 1949 and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1962. He attended the University of Southern California, where he earned a Master of Business Administration in 1970, as well as master's degrees in Liberal Arts in 1984 and in Professional Writing 1993. His masters theses was "Contrails: Memoirs of a Cold Warrior" which was subsequently published.
To remain current with industry developments, Lt. Col. Jaacks maintains affiliation with the Air Force Association, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. He also remains involved with the University of Southern California and University of Illinois Alumni Associations, the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, and is a member of Chi Gamma Iota Veteran's honorary scholastic fraternity.
As a testament to his success, Lt. Col. Jaacks has earned a number of accolades over the years. The United States Air Force honored him with the Meritorious Service Medal. The Boy Scouts of America presented him with the Award of Merit, the Exploring Spurgeon Award, the Silver Beaver Award and the President's Leadership Award. Rotary International recognized him with a District Outstanding President Award and the Lions Club gave him the Volunteer of the Year Award. Furthermore, Col. Jaacks was named the Los Angeles County Public Housing Authority Volunteer of the Year and was highlighted in the 25th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry and 20th through 23rd editions of Who's Who in the West.
