Dr. Mahajan is a distinguished engineering professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and was special advisor to the chancellor at the University of California, Davis. He currently works with materials that facilitate light wave communications, such as fiber optic networks. Dr. Mahajan is most proud of working on technologies that were well ahead of other organizations, with Bell Laboratories in New Jersey and as a Harwell fellow with The Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell, England.
Dr. Mahajan was born in Gurdaspur, India, and always loved science and mathematics. He wanted to study engineering, and attended Panjab University in India to earn a BS with highest honors before going on to study metallurgy at the Indian Institute of Science to earn a BE with highest honors. Dr. Mahajan could have worked in private industry, but chose research at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering in 1965. He accepted a position as research metallurgist at the University of Denver before joining Atomic Energy from 1968 to 1971. Dr. Mahajan went on to conduct research with AT&T Bell Laboratories until 1983, when he accepted a position as professor of electronic materials at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1997, he went on to the Arizona State University, where he served as professor of electronic materials and in various leadership positions, including director of the school of materials. In 2007, he was made Regent's Professor, and in 2009, he served as technology fellow with the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering. Dr. Mahajan became Distinguished Professor and Special Adviser to Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi at the University of California, Davis in 2011.
In addition to helping students understand the role of materials in lightwave communications, Dr. Mahajan has pioneered material science and engineering as a member of the site panel at the Materials Research Laboratory in 1993, as well as a visiting professor at the University of Antwerp in Belgium and L'Ecole Centrale de Lyon in France. He is a frequent lecturer, speaker, and patentee in the field, and has worked with the materials research advisory committee of the National Science Foundation. Notably, Dr. Mahajan served as editor of "Acta Materialia," the "Handbook on Semiconductors," "The Encyclopedia of Advanced Materials" and "The Encyclopedia of Materials: Science and Technology." He served as coordinating editor of The Acta Journals from 2004-2016. He received the Acta Materialia God Medal Award in 2018.
Dr. Mahajan is notably affiliated with the Materials Research Society, the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Engineering, the Electrochemical Society, and the American Society of Metals (ASM) International, which honored him with the Albert Sauveur Achievement Award, the Campbell Memorial Lecturer award, and the ASM Gold Medal. He served in numerous roles with the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society, which awarded him the John Bardeen Award, the Educator Award, and the R.F. Mehl Gold Medal. Dr. Mahajan is also the recipient of the Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award and the India Institute of Science Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Award. For outstanding research and professorship in materials engineering, he was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Mahajan married Sushma Sondhi in 1965 and has three sons: Sanjoy, Sunit and Ashish.
