Accruing 61 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Hagstrom has served as a retreat facilitator for the Center for Courage & Renewal since 2000 and an educational consultant since 1985. He began his professional career as a middle and high school teacher at the Skiles Middle School in Evanston, Illinois, in 1958, remaining in this position for five years before becoming assistant to the dean at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1963 to 1965. Dr. Hagstrom then went on to serve as dean of students at Kendall College in Evanston from 1965 to 1967 before returning to Evanston/Skokie School District 65 as director of instructional services from 1970 to 1972 and principal of the Willard Elementary School for two terms.
In the 1980s, Dr. Hagstrom accepted positions as associate professor at National Louis University in Chicago from 1975 to 1983, the University of Alaska Southeast from 1983 to 1984, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 1985 to 1993. Continuing on his professional path, he was the principal of the Denali Elementary School in Fairbanks, Alaska, from 1988 to 1991 and directed the Alaska Center for Educational Leadership for two years. A visiting professor at Michigan State University from 1993 to 1994, he joined the adjunct faculty at Portland State University and the University of Portland from 1994 to 1996. From 1996 to 2002, Dr. Hagstrom found success as an associate professor at Lewis & Clark College in Portland.
Prior to the start of his professional career, Dr. Hagstrom pursued a formal education at Grinnell College in Iowa, earning a Bachelor of Arts in sociology in 1957. Continuing his studies at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he received a Master of Education in Untied States history education in 1958, he went on to obtain a Doctor of Education in school leadership at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1966. In addition to these academic honors, Dr. Hagstrom was a certified teacher and administrator in the states of Alaska, Wisconsin and Illinois.
A prolific writer, Dr. Hagstrom has authored a number of works, including one he co-authored entitled "Keeping Teaching Fresh Through Metaphor," which was published by Educational Leadership in 2000. His first piece, "Harbor Lights Café," was published by New Directions for School Leadership in 1998, followed by "Seeking Clarity About Crisis" the following year. He eventually went on to publish "Honor the People; It's the Leader's Work" in 2002, "Feasting on My Life" in 2003, and "From Outrageous to Inspired: How to Build a Community of Leaders in Our Schools" in 2004. He is currently working on another project titled "Messengers of Encouragement," and has contributed myriad articles to professional journals. Likewise, Dr. Hagstrom administered a number of presentations between 1996 and 2004.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Hagstrom has received multiple honors and accolades throughout his career. He was notably presented with the Next Century Schools Award by the Nabisco Foundation in 1990 and the A+ Educator Award by the United States Department of Education in 1992. Moreover, Dr. Hagstrom was selected for inclusion in the 18th edition of Who's Who in the World, the 24th edition of Who's Who in the West, and the seventh and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education.
