Working in the field of information technology for 32 years, Dr. McMillan retired in 2010 as an applications architect for the First Data Corporation in Omaha, Neb. Previously, she served as an advanced systems engineer for Electronic Data Systems, a staff analyst for Enron and both a programmer and an analyst for Northern Natural Gas. Prior to these appointments, Dr. McMillan excelled as an assistant professor of history at Tufts University and Huron College between 1970 and 1977.
Born in Omaha, Dr. McMillan graduated from Omaha Benson High School as valedictorian of her class in 1961. She continued her studies in higher education with a Bachelor of Arts in history and mathematics, summa cum laude, at the Municipal University of Omaha (now the University of Nebraska Omaha) in 1965. Dr. McMillan concluded her studies at the University of Virginia, obtaining a Master of Arts in 1967 and a Doctor of Philosophy in history in 1970.
Beyond her primary responsibilities, Dr. McMillan is also affiliated with the Antiques Study Association, Questers, the Omaha chapter of Forget-Me-Not and Phi Beta Kappa. She is additionally active with the AARP as an income tax volunteer. Moreover, Dr. McMillan is a notable member of the Friends of the Omaha Public Library.
The recipient of a fellowship by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation between 1965 and 1966 followed by several fellowships from the University of Virginia, Dr. McMillan later completed a fellowship with the American Association of University Professors between 1966 to 1968. She also accepted a fellowship and a grant from the American Association of Learned Societies in 1973 to work on her dissertation. Likewise, Dr. McMillan has been selected for inclusion in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who of American Women.
