An acclaimed educator, Dr. Chen began his career as an assistant professor for Bucknell University from 1959 until 1965. Subsequently, he worked for Southern Illinois University as an associate professor. Over the years, Dr. Chen held a number of positions at Southern Illinois University, such as the chair of the department of thermal and environmental engineers from 1971 until 1985, a professor and the associate dean of the College of Engineering from 1985 until 1988, and the dean of the College of Engineering from 1989 until 1999, at which point he retired from the field.
During his time with Southern Illinois University, Dr. Chen also found success as a distinguished visiting professor for National Cheng Kung University. In order to remain aware of industry changes, he maintains his affiliation with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education and the American Chemical Society. For his professional accomplishments, Dr. Chen was presented with the Outstanding Alumnus Award from National Cheng Kung University in 1996.
Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Chen earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the Taiwan College of Engineering in 1953. He continued his studies at the University of Illinois, obtaining a Master of Science in 1957. Dr. Chen completed his academic efforts in 1959, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois.
