A seasoned and acclaimed educator, Dr. Groover is currently an emeritus professor of industrial engineering at Lehigh University in Bethlehem. He has worked for the university since 1964 when he was hired as a research assistant. Spending three years as an instructor, he went on to serve as an assistant professor from 1969 until 1974 and an associate professor from 1974 until 1978. Entering the field as a manufacturing engineer for the Eastman Kodak Co. from 1962 to 1964, he has also spent time as a consulting engineer for Ingersoll Rand Inc. and Air Products and Chemicals Inc. Even though his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Groover is especially proud of his first textbook on automation that was released in 1980.
Pursuing an education at Lehigh University, Dr. Groover first earned a Bachelor of Arts in arts and science in 1961 and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1962. Following these accomplishments, he earned a Master of Science in industrial engineering and a Doctor of Philosophy in industrial engineering from the university in 1966 and 1969, respectively. Dr. Groover has maintained professional affiliation with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the North American Manufacturing Research Institute and the Institute of Industrial Engineers, where he earned the Manufacturing Systems Award in 1984, the Fellow Award in 1987 and the Holzman Distinguished Educator Award in 1995.
Throughout his career, Dr. Groover authored a number of books, including "Automation, Production Systems and Computer-Aided Manufacturing" in 1980, the first through fifth editions of "Automation, Production Systems and Computer Integrated Manufacturing" between 1987 and 2019, and the first through seventh volumes of "Fundamentals of Modern Manufacturing," the most recent of which was published in 2019. For excellence in his career, he has also been the recipient of a number of honors and accolades. In addition to winning the W.D. Lewis Award from the Lehigh University Alumni Association in 1991, Dr. Groover was presented with the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award in 1995.
