With more than 30 years of experience in power system operation, maintenance, and control, Mr. Matern has become an authority in his industry and currently serves as a part-time instructor at Big Bend Community College. He began his career path as a substation operator at Southern California Edison Co. from 1965 to 1969. Thereafter, he advanced to senior substation operator from 1969 to 1972 in Madras, Oregon and a power system control craftsman from 1972 to 1999 at Bonneville Power Administration in both Longview, and Moses Lake, Washington. He ended his career in 1999 after 23 years as a power system control craftsman at the Moses Lake dispatching facility office for the Bonneville Power Administration.
Mr. Matern served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 to 1965 and as a chief master sergeant in the Air National Guard from 1984 to 2003. Concurrent with becoming an esteemed power system professional, he pursued higher education with an Associate of Applied Science from Big Bend Community College in 1991, and A Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Heritage College in 1996. He received dual iNARTE (interNational Association for Radio, Telecommunications, and Electromagnetics) dual Telecommunications Certifications in 1984 and a General Radiotelephone Operator License from the FCC in 1964. Mr. Matern started his career in power systems after completing an enlistment with the U.S. Marines and training as a radio operator/instructor from 1960 to 1965.
Apart from his career, Mr. Matern volunteered in his field and community. He was active as the president of the Nova Honors Parent Advisory Committee from 1985 to 1991. In his free time, Mr. Matern enjoys sailing and teaching. He married his wife Elizabeth A. Dinsmore in 1964 and has two children, Stephanie and Philip.
