Prior to attaining these positions, Dr. Swistel worked as a senior attending physician at Lenox Hill Hospital and the chief of the division of cardiothoracic surgery at Saint Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City.
Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Swistel has contributed his skills as the president of the New York State Thoracic Society and as the president of the board of directors for the Ukrainian Institute of America. A noted researcher for many years, his recent research has been focused in the areas of coronary artery disease and coronary artery bypass. Also an accomplished writer in his field, Dr. Swistel has authored and co-authored numerous articles published in such professional journals as Echocardiography, CASE: Cardiovascular Imaging Case Reports and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, among others.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Swistel earned a Doctor of Medicine from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in 1979. Following this accomplishment, he completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Saint Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center from 1979 to 1984 and a residency in cardiovascular surgery at the Montefiore Medical Center from 1984 to 1986. Concluding his studies at the Hackensack University Medical Center with a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery in 1987, Dr. Swistel has been certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery since 1998.
A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Swistel has been the recipient of a number of honors and accolades over the years. Recognized among America's Top Doctors from 2011 to 2014, he was also notably honored as a Top Doctor by New York Magazine from 2006 to 2013 and in Top Doctors: New York Metro Area from 2002 to 2014.
