Dr. Bennett began his path to becoming a medical professional as a student at the University of Michigan, where he completed coursework from 1956 to 1959. He completed a Bachelor of Science at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1960. Dr. Bennett returned to the aforementioned university to conclude his education, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine in 1963. He subsequently pursued an internship at the University of Oregon from 1963 to 1964 before returning to Northwestern from 1964 to 1966 as a medical resident.
Dr. Bennett worked as a member of the staff at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1969 to 1970. He returned to the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, excelling as an associate professor of medicine from 1970 to 1978 and as a professor of medicine and pharmacology from 1978 to 2000. In 2000, he accepted the position of the medical director of the kidney transplant center at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital of Portland, Oregon, which he holds to this day. Dr. Bennett has notably maintained a practice specializing in internal medicine throughout his career.
Dr. Bennett was presented with the Belding Scribner Award from the American Society of Nephrology for his contributions to the field. He is the author of "Pharmacology and Management of Hypertension" in 1994, "Manual of Nephrology" in 1990, and "Drug Therapy in Renal Failure" in 1994, in addition to being a contributor of articles for medical journals.
