With 43 years of industry experience to her credit, Ms. Gohlke most recently served as a public library volunteer at Sheridan Memorial Library in Texas from 1992 to 2002. She began her professional career as an English and Spanish teacher at Sheridan High School in 1959, remaining in this position for 11 years. She then taught English at Rice High School in Altair, Texas, from 1970 to 1981, also serving as a librarian from 1981 to 1992. In addition to these appointments, Ms. Gohlke served Rice High School as the university interscholastic league coordinator from 1970 to 1992 and future teacher adviser from 1971 to 1992.
Prior to embarking on her professional path, Ms. Gohlke pursued a formal education at Wharton County Junior College in Wharton, Texas, earning an Associate of Arts in 1957. She then attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1959 and a Master of Arts in 1963. In addition to these academic honors, she received a library certificate in 1961. Ms. Gohlke became involved in her profession because when she was growing up, her mother would tell her to go play some games and she would always play "school." She would be the teacher and she made it entertaining, along with her sister and brothers. Being an English major in college, she had to take a foreign language so she chose Spanish. She had the best grades in her English and Spanish classes.
Active in her local community, Ms. Gohlke has served on the advisory board for the San Bernard Electric Cooperative in Bellville, Texas, since.1980. She was a summer swimming instructor at the Sheridan Swimming Pool for two decades. Additionally, she was instrumental in the initiation of STEP in libraries through the Senior Texan Employment Program in Waco, Texas, between 1993 and 2003. Ms. Gohlke was also a contributing author for Texas Outlook Magazine in 1964.
Outside of her primary trade, Ms. Gohlke keeps updated of trends in her field through affiliations with numerous organizations. She has maintained involvement with the Texas State Teachers Association, the Texas Library Association, the Texas Association of Family and Community Education, the Texas Retired Teachers Association and the National Education Association. Likewise, Ms. Gohlke has been a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Delta Zeta.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, the University of Texas bestowed Ms. Gohlke with two National Defense Education Act fellowships in Spanish in 1960 and English in 1962. She was also the recipient of the John H. Lovelady Lifetime for Youth Award from Future Teachers of America in 1992. Moreover, Ms. Gohlke was selected for inclusion in the seventh edition of Who's Who in American Education and the 24th and 25th editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
