Drawing upon 54 years of practiced excellence in law, Mr. Mortimer graduated from Occidental College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. He served in the United States Army for two years before being honorably discharged in 1962. Upon his return to civilian life, he decided law school would be a good fit and a versatile next step, and he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in 1965.
Admitted to practice law by the California State Bar in 1966, Mr. Mortimer was a trial attorney for the state of California from 1965 to 1973 before leaving to work for the firm Thelen, Marrin, Johnson & Bridges in Los Angeles. He was an associate at the firm from 1973 to 1976 before becoming partner from 1976 to 1993. He then worked individually in private practice from 1994 to 1995 before being appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court as a judge in 1995. He served on the court until 2008, including as a member of the court's Complex Litigation Panel from 2000 to 2008. Since 2008, he has been an arbitrator and mediator for ADR Services, Inc.
Judge Mortimer was awarded the Judicial Civility Award from the American Board of Trial Advocates in 2000 and an honorary Doctor of Letters in 2016. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and the International Academy of Trial Judges, where he is a former president. Likewise, he is on the executive committee of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates and is president of the Los Angeles Railroad Heritage Foundation. He serves on the National Board of Directors of the American Board of Trial Advocates, is a member of the Pasadena Bar Association and the Irish-American Bar Association, and is currently a member of the Board of Governors of Occidental College. Judge Mortimer is a member of the San Marino Community Church, a past president and Honorary Member of the San Marino City Club, a member of the Twilight Club of Pasadena, the San Gabriel Country Club and the Balboa Yacht Club.
Married to his wife Cecilia Vick Mortimer since 1962, Mr. Mortimer is the proud father of two daughters, Michelle and Kimberly, and two grandchildren. In his leisure time, Mr. Mortimer enjoys photography and is a railroad enthusiast.
