Her career began as a first-grade teacher at the Learning Improvement Center at Melvindale-Northern Allen Park School District in 1969. From there, she became an interior designer and owner at La Maison Magnifique, an art, remedial reading and writing teacher at Clover School District, a district vocational coordinator for special populations at Aiken County Public School District, a curriculum supervisor at Beaufort-Jasper Academy for Career Excellence and an art teacher and technology preparatory director at Gaston County Schools.
More recently, Ms. Abell worked as an assistant principal at Union County Public Schools, an elementary school principal at Wilson County School District, an assistant principal at Midwood High School, an assistant principal at Sedgefield Middle School and a teacher at Lake Wylie Elementary School prior to her retirement in 2003. Prior to becoming an esteemed educator, Ms. Abell pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Arts in education from Eastern Michigan University in 1969 and a Master of Education in school administration from Winthrop University in 1982.
Ms. Abell authored "An American Tragedy Unfolding: Our Educational System" and has contributed a number of articles to professional journals. Outside of her professional responsibilities, Ms. Abell remains aware of the changes and advancements in her industry through relevant organizations. She is a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the American Vocational Association, the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, the North Carolina Association of Educators, the National Business Education Association, and the South Carolina Network for Women in Administration. Apart from her professional life, Ms. Abell has visited more than 19 countries and enjoys horseback riding, antiquing, painting and fishing.
