Prior to his retirement, he worked for Clemson University as a professor from 1978 to 1998 and an associate professor from 1973 to 1978. Dr. Zehr began his career at the aforementioned university as an assistant professor from 1969 to 1973.
Dr. Zehr initially pursued an education at Goshen College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1960. He continued his studies at Cornell University, earning a Master of Science in 1965. Dr. Zehr concluded his studies at Cornell University in 1969, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Zehr has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. A contributor of articles to professional journals and trade magazines, he is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Phytopathological Society. Dr. Zehr has also been actively associated with Sigma Xi and Gamma Sigma Delta.
Throughout his career, Dr. Zehr has been celebrated for his achievements in the field. The recipient of numerous research grants, he was presented with the Carroll R. Miller Award for Peach Disease Research, and the Godley-Snell Award for Excellence in Research. Likewise, Dr. Zehr has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
