At the start of his career, he was hired by the University of Ceylon in Sri Lanka as a lecturer, from 1968 to 1974. Furthermore, he joined the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, as an assistant professor of medicine, between 1979 and 1981. Dr. Kannangara was assistant professor of medicine at the Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1981 to 1997.
Other professional endeavors include serving as a consultant of infectious diseases and chairman of infection control for the North Philadelphia Health System for 26 years, and consultant for the Eastern Hospital, Easton, and the St Luke's University Health Network in Pennsylvania. During his carrier, Dr. Kannangara was responsible for the discovery of a new species of a trematode and a nematode, established the crab hosts for Paragonimus Sp. in Sri Lanka, discovered Trypanasoma Megatrypanum ingens in a mouse deer, the life cycle of Achillurbainia, a trematode transmissible to man and more recently, studies on tick-borne diseases. He has contributed numerous articles and book chapters in his areas of expertise.
Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Kannangara earned the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from University of Ceylon, Sri Lanka in 1966. He received a Master of Science degree in Medical Parasitology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London in 1971 and Doctor of Philosophy in Helminthology from Imperial College, University of London in 1974. Dr. Kannangara is additionally a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Infectious Diseases.
Dr Kannangara served in the United States Army Reserve, Medical corps. for 21 years and retired at the rank of Colonel in 2003. He has received numerous military awards, a Mark of Distinction for MSc. From the University of London and nominated as an Honoree by the St Luke's Hospital Health Network. Outside of work, Dr. Kannangara enjoys ball room dancing, travel and gardening in spare time.
