Now retired from teaching Dr. Jackson is Professor Emerita from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. She was a member of the music faculty from 1954-1956 and from 1961-1991. Previously she taught at Arkansas Tech University from 1957-1961 and at Windsor Hills Elementary School in Los Angeles, CA as a special music teacher.
Dr. Jackson is a graduate of the University of Illinois in 1950 with a Bachelor of Music (with highest honors, majoring in violin and composition). She obtained her Master of Music in 1952 from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and her Doctor of Philosophy in musicology in 1959 from Stanford University.
Dr. Jackson was a coauthor with Dr. Bruce Benward of Practical Beginning Theory in 1963 (now in its 8th edition). She also coauthored The A.S. T.A. Dictionary of Bowing Terms for String Instruments with Drs. Joel Berman and Kenneth Sarch (1968, 3rd edition 1987). As Barbara Garvey Seagrave she had also coauthored The Songs of the Minnesingers and The Songs of the Minnesinger Wizlaw of Rugen with Dr. Wesley Thomas. In 1994 she culminated her research on the contribution of women composers of the past with the reference work "Say Can You Deny Me"; A Guide to Surviving Music by Women from the 16th Through the 18th Centuries, listing the location of extant manuscript and early printed sources by women in major libraries in Europe and the U.S.
In 1982 she founded the music publishing company ClarNan Editions, specializing in music by historic women. She served as General Editor and Publisher until 2019, when the company became a division of Classical Vocal Reprints; she continues to edit music for that company. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Kappa Lambda and Sigma Alpha Iota (of which she is also an Honorary Member). In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Jackson has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in American Education.
