With 45 years of professional experience, Ms. McDonald-Jacobson has been a complaint investigator for long term care facilities for the state of Tennessee since 2002, also serving as an agency nurse from 2000 to 2002. Prior to obtaining these roles, she was infection control preventionist at TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center from 1997 to 2000, neuro charge nurse at Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital from 1994 to 1997, and a neuro clinical nurse specialist with Nashville Memorial from 1990 to 1994. From 1984 to 1990, she was neuro clinical nurse specialist with St. Anthony Medical Center, having held the same position with Madison General from 1983 to 1984. Earlier in her career, she was a neuro nurse clinician and staff nurse with Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1974 to 1983.
Ms. McDonald-Jacobson began her career as a student at the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where she obtained a degree in nursing in 1969. She then joined Montreal Neurological Hospital for postgraduate courses in neuroscience in 1971, and she received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Winnipeg in 1974. She continued her studies with Johns Hopkins University, earning a Master of Science in 1984. She is a registered nurse in the states of Maryland, Wisconsin, Illinois and Tennessee, and she is certified as a neuroscience registered nurse by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

She is a member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, and she was the Madison and Rockford chapter president of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in American Nursing.
