With more than 50 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Vamos has become an authority in his industry. After serving in the US Navy including as Naval Control of Shipping Officer for Reykjavik Iceland, he began his career as an engineering geologist at Geothechnics and Recourses Inc., in 1962. He was an Associate Transportation Planner at NY State Department of Public Works (later renamed Department of Transportation) from 1965 to 1968, then served as Director of Planning for NYS Conservation Dept. from 1968 to 1974. He then served at NY State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation as Deputy Commissioner for Planning and Development from 1975 until 1994. He ended his career in 2016 as an associate of planning and engineering consultant at the Hudson Group LLC.

He has also been an advocate for improved bicycle and pedestrian travel and helped establish policies and laws to accomplish these goals.
Mr. Vamos survived the Holocaust and immigrated to the United States in 1948. Prior to becoming an established professional, he pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science in urban planning from Columbia University in 1960 and 1965, respectively. He completed postgraduate coursework in public affairs at the University at Albany from 1968 to 1974.
Apart from his career, Mr. Vamos has volunteered as a Section Chief at the Berkshires from 1989 to 1990 and a senior patroller at the National Ski Patrol from 1967 to 1990. He is a certified member of the American Planning Association. As a Holocaust survivor, Mr. Vamos has given speeches to a number of school groups. He is married to Maria G.A. Vanderweerd and has three children and five grandchildren. In light of his outstanding contributions to the field, Mr. Vamos was featured in the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the East.
