With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Mr. Smith has been the director of the Morehouse Parish Library since 2016. Prior to obtaining his current role, he was the library dean at the University of Louisiana Monroe from 2003 to 2016, where he was also the dean of information services from 1996 to 2003 and the library director from 1993 to 1996. From 1988 to 1993, he was the associate director of general services at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma, having been the associate director of public service and the collection department since 1982. Earlier in his career, Mr. Smith held a number of positions with Southern Illinois University, including education librarian from 1978 to 1982, library instructor from 1973 to 1978 and acadeic adviser from 1970 to 1973.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Mr. Smith has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations, including the American Library Association and LOUIS: The Louisiana Library Network. Active with the Technology for Education Consortium, he also belongs to the Louisiana Academic Librarians Information Network Consortium, the Louisiana Association of College and Research and the Vice President/President of the Louisiana Library Association. Mr. Smith is further involved with the Oklahoma Library Association, the Association of College & Research Libraries, Phi Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.
Holding librarian certification in the state of Louisiana, Mr. Smith pursued an education at Southern Illinois University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1968 and a Master of Arts in 1972. He then joined the University of Missouri and earned a Master of Library Science in 1976. In light of all his accomplishments, Mr. Smith has previously been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
