Mr. Sasser's interest in writing began as a child, when he learned to read and began to write stories as a distraction from his family's poverty. He later enlisted the United States Navy in 1960, serving as a Navy journalist until 1964. Mr. Sasser completed his service in the United States Army Special Forces from 1966 to 1967 before enrolling at Miami Dade Junior College in Miami, Florida, from which he graduates with an Associate of Arts in 1968. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts from Florida State University in 1969, and completed postgraduate coursework at Oklahoma State University from 1977 to 1978.
Active in the Oklahoma Army National Guard from 1970 to 1973, Mr. Sasser was again recruited for the United States Army Special Forces from 1973 to 1983, during which time he was deployed in Southeast Asia, Central America and Japan. He worked as a United States Army Reserves combat instructor from 1983 to 1995. Mr. Sasser would find success as a police officer with the Miami Police Department from 1965 to 1968 and a homicide detective for the Tulsa Police Department from 1970 to 1979.
Mr. Sasser received a number of accolades from the governor of Oklahoma for his work for the Tulsa Police Department, recognition that he identifies as a highlight of his career. Additionally, he has taught at Tulsa Junior College, Tulsa, Oklahoma since 1976. Likewise, Mr. Sasser has excelled as a freelance journalist since 1979.
Mr. Sasser is the author of numerous crime and thriller novels, including "No Gentle Streets" in 1984, and "Blood in the Hills" in 2017. He has published more than 60 books and novels, and in excess of 3,000magazine articles and short stories. His most recent book is Crushing the Collective The Last chance to Keep America Free and Self-Governing. He is a lifetime member of the Oklahoma Writers Federation, and a recipient of the 1992 Tulsa Authors Award from the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Holding both a pilot's license and a SCUBA certification, Mr. Sasser enjoys parachuting, diving, and horsemanship in his spare time.
