Supported by years of experience and educational training Ms. Thalmann has found success as an environmental scientist with the Utah Division of Air Quality in Salt Lake City, UT, from 1984 to 2017, when she retired. After completing coursework at Weber State University from 1970 to 1971, she enrolled at the University of Utah, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in urban and regional planning in 1975. Soon thereafter, she began her career as a housing resource specialist with the Utah Migrant Council in Salt Lake City in 1975. Later working as a land use planner and an engineering technician for Wasatch Front Regional Council in Bountiful from 1975 to 1976, Ms. Thalmann earned a Master of urban, regional and environmental planning from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1979.
Moreover, Ms. Thalmann excelled as a program analyst for the State Planning Coordinator's Office in Salt Lake City, before accepting the position of a technical writer for Templeton Linke and Associates from 1980 to 1984. She worked at the State of Utah, Division of Air Quality from 1984 to 2017. There, she conducted over 3,000 compliance inspections, reviewed thousands of asbestos abatement notification, demolition notification, and revisions to notifications. She also reviewed and approved hundreds of company certification, individual certification, and many asbestos courses. Outside of her primary responsibilities, she has been active as an instructor for the National Education Program on Asbestos and the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational & Environmental Health from 1990 to 2010. One of the highlights of her career was assisting on the planning for the Jordan River Parkway and writing the 'Asbestos Rules.' Likewise, Ms. Thalmann has excelled as an author, publishing a brochure, "Keep the Home Fire Burning," in 1985, and as an editor for the Utah Air Monitor from 1985 to 1988, both for the Utah Division of Air Quality.
To remain knowledgeable of the changes in her field, Ms. Thalmann is affiliated with the Utah Public Employees Association, the Local and National Asbestos Association, the National Wildlife Federation and the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, among other organizations. She has been the recipient of an award for the wood burning brochure from the State of Utah in 1990. Outside of her primary responsibilities, Ms. Thalmann enjoys hiking, skiing and walking her dogs in her spare time.
Ms. Thalmann was a member of Taylorsville City Leisure Activities, Recreation and Parks from 2006 until about a month ago and was the vice chairman to the committee from 2012 to 2015, and was the chairman from 2015 to about a month ago.
