Dr. Meeks, a Woolsey professor emeritus of religious studies at Yale University, taught at the prestigious university in New Haven, Connecticut, for 30 years before retiring in 1999. During his tenure, he intermittently served as chairman of the department of religious studies between 1972 and 1983 and was director of the Division of Humanities between 1988 and 1991. Dr. Meeks also held teaching appointments at Dartmouth College and Indiana University, was a William Allan Neilson professor at Smith College, and was a visiting professor at Emory University, the University of Glasgow and Williams College.
Specializing in the study of the New Testament, social history of earliest Christianity and the formation of early Christian morality, Dr. Meeks has written extensively in his field. Best known for his writings of the Apostle Paul and on the Fourth Gospel, he has authored several books, including "The First Urban Christians" in 1983, "Moral World of the First Christians" in 1986 and "Christ is the Question" in 2006. He has also contributed numerous articles to scholarly journals.
Highly educated, Dr. Meeks received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1953 and a Bachelor of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1956. He later attended Yale University, where he acquired both a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in New Testament studies in 1964 and 1965, respectively. Dr. Meeks was later presented with an honorary doctorate from the University of Uppsala in Sweden in 1990.
Dr. Meeks is a fellow of the British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a member and past president of the Society of Biblical Literature and a member, past president and former editorial board member of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas, which is an international society of New Testament scholars.
Receiving several fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, Dr. Meeks was also a Fulbright and Kent fellow. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Religion and Who's Who in the East.
