Alongside this role, she has been supervising analyst, supervisor and teacher at the C.G. Jung Institute for Analytical Psychology, and presently a member of the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association. She commenced her career as a pastoral psychotherapy resident at the Blanton-Peale Institute & Counseling Center 1962-1965.
In addition to her primary career responsibilities, Dr. Ulanov has served as a public lecturer to psychological and religious groups throughout the United States and abroad. She has lectured extensively in such countries as South Korea, Cuba, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia and Russia, among others. A contributor of myriad articles to professional publications, she has also sat on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Pastoral Care and of the Journal of Analytical Psychology.
A prolific author, Dr. Ulanov has written myriad books regarding religion and psychology. With her late husband Barry Ulanov their six books include, "Transforming Sexuality: The Archetypal World of Anima and Animus," "The Healing Imagination," "The Witch and the Clown: Two Archetypes of Human Sexuality," "Cinderella and Her Sisters: The Envied and the Envying," "Primary Speech: The Psychology of Prayer," and "Religion and the Unconscious." By herself, Dr. Ulanov is the renowned author of sixteen books which include, "The Wizards' Gate," "The Female Ancestors of Christ," "The Wisdom of the Psyche," "The Feminine in Jungian Psychology and Christian Theology," "Madness & Creativity," "The Functioning Transcendent," "Spiritual Aspects of Clinical Work," "The UnShuttered Heart," "Knots and Their Untying," and "The Psychoid, Soul and Psyche: Piercing Space/Time Barriers."
To prepare for her career, Dr. Ulanov pursued formal education at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1959. From there, she attended Union Theological Seminary, earning a Master of Divinity in Theology in 1962 and a PhD in Psychology and Religion. In light of her achievements, she was also presented with honorary doctorates from the Virginia Theological Seminary, Loyola University Chicago and the Christian Theological Seminary.
To remain abreast of developments in her field, Dr. Ulanov is a member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology. Recognized by Loyola University for distinguished work in psychology and religion, she also received the Vision Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis and a Distinguished Alumna Award from the Blanton-Peale Institute of Religion and Health. Dr. Ulanov is the recipient of the Oskar Pfister Award from the American Psychiatric Association, the Distinguished Contribution Award from the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and the Gradiva Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis for her book "Finding Space: Winnicott, God and Psychic Reality."
Happily married for many years to the late Barry Ulanov, Dr. Ulanov is the proud mother of one son, Alexander, and three step-children, Anne, Nicholas, and Katie. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, swimming, walking, gardening, and looking at paintings. She was highlighted in the third edition of Who's Who in American Education and the 18th edition of Who's Who of American Women.
