Now retired as a professor emeritus, Dr. Oxman had found success as an educator, researcher and clinician for more than 30 years. He began his career as an intern with the UCSF-Mount Zion Medical Center in 1975. The following year, Dr. Oxman became a resident in psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire, while completing a fellowship in consultation and cancer psychiatry with the renowned institution until 1980.
Soon thereafter, Dr. Oxman served the University of Cincinnati Medical Center as an assistant professor in psychiatry and family medicine for three years. Moreover, he excelled as an assistant professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, from 1983 to 1987, where he later held the post of an associate professor until 1995. Subsequently, Dr. Oxman worked as a professor for the Geisel School of Medicine from 1995 until his retirement in 2007.
Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Oxman had maintained his involvement as the medical director for the Glencliff Home for the Elderly in New Hampshire, and director of geriatric psychiatry with the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Civically, he has dedicated his time and resources as the chairman of the Hanover Conservation Commission for four years. An expert in the field, he was active as the editor of the International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine for four years, and the Online Abstract Service of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry for two years. Additionally, Dr. Oxman has contributed his research in over 100 articles that were published in professional journals.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, he was presented numerous honors and accolades throughout the course of his career. A recipient of the Lange Award from the University of Colorado, he has also been presented with the Merrell Resident Research Award from the Dartmouth Medical School, the Joffee Research Fund Award from the University of Cincinnati, and the Geriatric Mental Health Academic Award from the National Institutes of Health, among several others. Aside from his professional duties, Dr. Oxman enjoys running, music, skiing, photography, and traveling in his spare time.
Dr. Oxman initially pursued an education at Dartmouth College graduating with an A.B. in philosophy, magna cum laude, in 1971. Four years later, he obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Colorado. Moreover, he accepted an Honorary Master of Arts from Dartmouth College in 1996. Additionally, Dr. Oxman is a diplomate of psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
