Dr. Kosmala has led a distinguished career teaching mathematics for more than 40 years. Currently a professor in the department of mathematical sciences at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, he was originally hired as an assistant professor in 1984. Prior to his tenure in North Carolina, Dr. Kosmala taught mathematics at the University of Tampa and Hillsborough Community College in Florida. Some of his field interests include difference equations and oscillation theory in ordinary differential equations.
A former visiting lecturer of mathematics at his alma mater, the University of South Florida, between 1980 and 1983, Dr. Kosmala was also an invited speaker and lecturer at numerous conferences and seminars. Furthermore, he has published extensively in his area of expertise, contributing articles to various peer review journals such as the Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications and Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences.
Outside of his work in academia, Dr. Kosmala is a tenured ski instructor who was taught the sport by his mother at the age of four. Beating the odds by surviving a near tragic ski accident later in life, he continues to ski today. He is also a talented violinist who learned how to play the instrument from his father, a renowned European concert violist. He continues to perform solo violin concerts in chamber music, orchestra and opera productions as well as with bluegrass groups. Notably, Dr. Kosmala has performed in solo recitals in British Columbia, Canada, and with the Rome Festival Orchestra in Rome, Italy.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Kosmala pursued an education at the University of South Florida. First earning an Associate of Arts in mathematics in 1972, he went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in applied mathematics and a Master of Arts in applied mathematics in 1974 and 1976, respectively. He concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of South Florida in 1980. Additionally, Dr. Kosmala has been certified as a ski instructor level three through the Professional Ski Instructors of America.
Dr. Kosmala is a member of Professional Ski Instructors of America and has been a staff trainer at a number of ski schools around the country. For the last 10+ years, Dr. Kosmala was a faculty advisor and a coach of Appalachian State University's Alpine Ski Team with a number of national qualifiers. In 1985, Dr. Kosmala and his sister Weneta, had an audience with the family's distant friend, the Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. Dr. Kosmala is a member of Pi Mu Epsilon and a past president of the University of South Florida Bicycle Club. During his career, he secured grants from Appalachian State University and the University of Tampa. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has also been featured in several editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
