INDIANAPOLIS, IN, July 23, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Mr. Lord with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Lord celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Prior to the beginning of his consulting career Mr. Lord began his interest in technical theatre at Benjamin Bosse High School in Evansville, Indiana, graduating in 1949. His work in theatre continued at (then) Evansville College earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1953. While there he was student technical director. He was a member of Alpha Psi Omega, Pi Delta Epsilon, Tau Kappa Alpha, and Phi Zeta (now Lambda Chi Alpha).
Mr. Lord began expansion of his career in fabrication, installation, sales and maintenance of theatrical equipment with Merrill Stage Equipment in Indianapolis in late 1953 prior to serving in the United States Army 1953-1955. At Fort Leonard Wood he received Infantry and Engineers Basic training then attended Engineer Leadership School. While there he received the American Spirit Honor Medal.
He was able to utilize his technical theater knowledge while serving in Germany having Temporary Duty with Special Services. In one session he installed a dimming system in a building in Frankfurt that was being remodeled into a theater. In another session he designed the theatrical lighting for the annual All Army Talent Show Finals in Munich. He completed military service with rank of SP-2.
After fulfilling his military service he returned to work at Merrill's from 1955 to 1957. From 1957 to 1958 he served as scenic carpenter at WFBM-TV in Indianapolis. In the summer of 1958 he began work as Production Supervisor for Avondale Playhouse, a professional summer stock tent theater. This work lasted for six summers. In the fall of 1958 he was hired as teacher of Tech Theater, speech and drama at the new North Central High School in Indianapolis. Here he taught, managed the auditorium and spent the last 13 years as Chairman of the Performing Arts Department retiring in 1996.
Mr. Lord concluded his formal studies with a Master of Arts from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1961 serving as a graduate assistant to Mr. Ted Fuchs. As a part of his degree requirements he developed an outline for an introductory technical theater textbook.
Immediately after earning his Masters degree at Northwestern he began his career as William H. Lord, Inc., Theater Consultant. The first project was assisting in the planning of a new physical facility for North Central High School. His experience has been utilized providing information, plans and specifications for more than 575 educational theaters. Over the years he has provided services for 31 architectural firms. As part of this work he often offered detailed written information to assist workmen. An example is "Installing a Stage Lighting System". In 1978 he published his textbook Stagecraft 1: Your Introduction to Backstage Work. The second edition was offered in 1991 and a third in 2000. From 1958 to 1996 he served as President of Theater Associates, Inc. a privately owned Indiana theater equipment Corporation.
Having been a member of Thespians since High School, he continued association becoming Troupe Sponsor and was inducted into the Educational Theatre Association Hall of Fame in 1995. His work at North Central was recognized by receipt of the Sagamore of the Wabash award from the governor of Indiana in 1996.
Civically his focus has been with the Northminster Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. Since 1955 he has been a choir member and has served as deacon, elder, and Chairman of Buildings and Grounds committee. Mr. Lord has also been a member of United States Institute for Theatre Technology, Entertainment Services and Technology Association, Illuminating Engineering Society, and Indiana State Teachers Association, as well as other theatre related organizations.
Mr. Lord and Catherine Ball were married in September of 1957. She also has a Masters Degree in Drama and Education. They have two daughters both of whom have Ph. D degrees and have written books in their fields. Jennifer is an ordained Presbyterian Minister and presently Professor of Homiletics and Liturgical Studies. Louise is an Independent Consultant specializing in Universal Design for Learning and provides services internationally.
His family has supported his interest and his work since childhood. He credits four generations of family for his exposure to many of the details and elements that have made him successful.
Outside of work Mr. Lord enjoys reading and adapting, adjusting and / or fixing things that need adaptation, adjustment or repair.
