Growing up in a modest, working-class family, Mr. Gray had been drawn to law since his adolescence. The first member of his family to attend college, he had a strong drive to work hard to ensure a better life for them and for himself. He initially attended the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1963 followed by a Juris Doctor in 1966. Mr. Gray worked part-time throughout his academic efforts to help defray the costs of his education.
In 1966, Mr. Gray was admitted to practice law by the Colorado Bar, and has practiced before the United States District Court for the District of Colorado and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He began his career as a deputy district attorney for the 10th Judicial District in Pueblo, Colorado, serving from 1967 to 1969. From 1969 to 1970, Mr. Gray worked as a deputy district attorney for the 20th Judicial District in Boulder, Colorado. He later served as a deputy state public defender based in Boulder from 1970 to 1972 before entering his private practice. Mr. Gray further excelled as a partner at the firm Miller & Gray in Boulder from 1973 to 1985 and continued working in private practice as a partner at Purvix, Gray Thomson, LLP, in Boulder from 1985 until his retirement in 2014.
Mr. Gray has served as a member, vice chair and chair of the Colorado Supreme Court grievance committee from 1983 to 1988. He was also a member of the Colorado Supreme Court's criminal rules committee from 1982 to 1984. In 1985, Mr. Gray received the American College of Trial Lawyers rarely given award for courageous advocacy for his court-appointed defense of the accused in a high-publicity murder case. Mr. Gray was slated to serve as president of the International Society of Barristers in 2008. In 2019, Mr. Gray was presented with the William Lee Knous Award, the highest honor conferred by the University of Colorado School of Law, for his career-spanning accomplishments.
