With nearly 40 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Lerner has been recognized as a professor emeritus of the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn since 2003. Prior to his retirement, he held a number of biochemistry positions with the school system, including as a professor from 1980 to 2003, an associate professor from 1973 to 1980, an assistant professor from 1967 to 1973, and an instructor of biochemistry from 1965 to 1967. Dr. Lerner began his career as a research associate with the University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago from 1964 to 1965.
Dr. Lerner first pursued an education at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1959. He continued his studies with the aforementioned school, earning a Master of Science in 1961. Dr. Lerner concluded his academic efforts at the University of Illinois in 1964, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.

He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society. Prior to retirement, he was a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society. A contributor of more than 70 articles to professional journals, also authored chapters for books. Dr. Lerner has been noted in Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the East.
