Embarking on his career path as a fellow in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 1970 to 1972, he went on to excel as the director of psychiatric out-patient services at the Jacobi Medical Center from 1976 to 1993. From 1996 to 2015, he served as a psychoanalyst at the Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research at Columbia University. Dr. Buckley concluded his career in 2017, after 30 years as a professor of psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Prior to becoming an esteemed psychiatrist, Dr. Buckley obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1966, before completing an internship at the Dunedin Public Hospital in 1967. During his time in medical school, he was notably mentored by Dr. Harold Bourne, who he credits with steering him towards the field of psychiatry. Concluding his studies with a residency in psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 1968 to 1970, Dr. Buckley has since been recognized as a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
An accomplished writer in his field, Dr. Buckley co-authored "The Psychiatric Interview in Clinical Practice" in 2016 and edited "Essential Papers on Object Relations" in 1986. Outside of his career, he remains informed of the changes and advancements in his industry through relevant organizations. He is a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association and a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Buckley is most proud of his time as the director of residency training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he trained more than 100 residents in psychiatry between 1993 and 2014.
In light of the many achievements in his field, Dr. Buckley has received a number of awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2010, he was named a Distinguished Life Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association. He has also been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. Happily married to Maxine Joan Antell since 1977, he is the proud father of one child and grandfather to one grandchild. In his free time, Dr. Buckley enjoys studying art history and the lives of famous painters.
