A native of Tilsit, Germany, Dr. Wiese attended the University of Kiel in Germany and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1954. Three years later, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the renowned institution and was further presented with an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in 1993.
After immigrating to the United States in 1957, Dr. Wiese settled in Maryland and accepted the position of a research associate with the University of Maryland in College Park from 1958 to 1959. Soon thereafter, he joined the National Bureau of Standards in Gaithersburg, Maryland, as a research physicist in 1960. During his tenure with the bureau, Dr. Wiese held the posts of a chief of plasma spectroscopy section and the chief of the atomic and plasma radiation division until 1991. He concluded his time with the bureau as the chief of the atomic physics division in 2004. Further, he contributed as an expert research associate for the National Institute of Standards and Technology from 2005 until his departure in 2018.
Other career-related endeavors to Dr. Wiese's credit include lecturing for the University of California in the summers of 1963 and 1964. A pronounced voice in the industry, Dr. Wiese's written works include "Atomic Transition Probabilities," "Atomic Transition Probabilities for Carbon, Nitrogen and Oxygen" and" Regularities in Atomic Oscillator Strengths." In light of his achievements in the field, he was the recipient of the Silver Medal Award from the Department of Commerce in 1962, the Gold Medal Award in 1971, the Humboldt Award in 1986, the A.S. Fleming Award from the United States Chamber of Commerce in 1971, and the Distinguished Career in Science Award from the Washington Academy of Science in 1992.
To remain abreast of developments in the field, Dr. Wiese maintains affiliation with the American Physical Society as a fellow, as well as a member of the Optical Society, the Washington Academy of Science and the International Astronomical Union. An exceptional Marquis listee, he was selected for inclusion in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
