Mr. O'Connell's firm notably provides a wide array of legal services, including business and corporate transactions, commercial litigation, accidents and injuries, long-term disability claims and international transactions and disputes.
Prior to joining the Tucson firm, Mr. O'Connell was the owner of O'Connell & Associates, P.C. for 40 years, which at the time was the only firm in Tucson listed in taxation, asset protection and corporate law, and only one of three firms listed in the trust and estates, wills and probate sections of the Bar Registrar. Throughout his career, Mr. O'Connell has authored and contributed to several books and articles on tax and law related topics, such as asset protection strategies. His work has been featured in a number of professional journals, including the Arizona Bar Journal and the Arizona Law Review. A founding fellow of the Arizona Bar Foundation, Mr. O'Connell is also a longtime member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Arizona, and the Pima County Bar Association.
Mr. O'Connell was a law professor at the University of Arizona College of Law for five years beginning in 1968 and was the assistant dean during the last three years. He received the Outstanding Professor Award in 1969. He was also invited to join The Order of the Coif while tenured at the law school. Recognized in Best Lawyers in America, Arizona's Finest Lawyers and Super Lawyers, he has also been rated an AV-Rated Preeminent Attorney by Martindale-Hubbell. In light of all his accomplishments, Mr. O'Connell has been cited in the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders of America and in multiple editions of Who's Who in American Law.
Before embarking on his career, Mr. O'Connell earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Oregon in Eugene in 1963 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law in 1966. Following these accomplishments, he concluded his studies at New York University, where he obtained a Master of Laws in 1967. Certified as a tax specialist by the Arizona Board of Legal Specialization, he has been licensed to practice law by the Oregon State Bar and the State Bar of Arizona. Inspired to a career in law by his father, who was a law professor and a chief justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, Mr. O'Connell noted that some of his greatest achievements have been in his success in estate planning and asset protect for large estates.
