Supported by professional experience and a strong educational background, Dr. Moss first completed coursework at Pomona College in Claremont, California, between 1945 and 1947. Pursuing further education at the University of California Los Angeles, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1949. Soon thereafter, he earned a Master of Arts from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York, in 1950. Dr. Moss concluded his studies with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles during 1957.
After completing principal studies with Leon Kirchner between 1951 and 1953, Dr. Moss received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation (1959, 1968) and the Fulbright Association (1953). Dr. Moss served as an assistant professor of music theory at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, from 1960 and 1965. He further progressed to an associate professor with the aforementioned the university between 1965 and 1969. Following this opportunity, he joined the University of Maryland in College Park, where he served as a professor of music composition from 1969 until his retirement in 2014. In 2015, Dr. Moss was recognized as an honorary professor by the Tianjin Conservatory of Music in Tianjin, China.
Civically, Dr. Moss served in the United States Army between 1954 and 1956. To remain aware of changes in the field, he maintains a professional relationship with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. For his accomplishments in the field, he was been selected by the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in Italy as a composer-in-residence during 1968. Additionally, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Teacher Award from the University of Maryland between 1982 and 1983 as well as several grants from the National Endowment of Humanities. Likewise, Dr. Moss has been selected for inclusion in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Entertainment.
