With more than 65 years of professional experience, Dr. Amick has been a consultant with the Department of Energy in Washington, DC, since 1988. Serving in the same capacity at his own eponymous firm, Amick Associates, since 1993, he previously was a photovoltaics process group leader at Mobil Solar Energy Corp. from 1986 to 1993, as well as a photovoltaics area manager for Exxon from 1976 to 1986 and a materials and process manager with RCA from 1971 to 1976. Earlier in his career, he held a number of positions with RCA Laboratories, including group leader from 1965 to 1971, and research chemist and member of the technical staff from 1953 to 1965.
Dr. Amick began his career as a student at Princeton University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1949. He continued his studies with the school, completing a Master of Arts in chemistry in 1951. He concluded his education in 1952, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry. He subsequently served as a research associate with Princeton University until 1953.
Notably, Dr. Amick devised a coherent model to explain the operation of Electrofax, an electro-photographic copying material, and process. He also pioneered a process for the growth of epixial layers of Gallium Arsenide and Gallium Arsenide Phosphide on a single-crystal Germanium substrate. For his success in his research, Dr. Amick has received a number of patents including "Semiconductor Devices" in 1963, "solar Cell Module" in 1980 and "Method of Making Solar Cell with Wrap-Around Electrode" in 1982. Likewise, he has authored a number of publications and presentations throughout his career. He co-wrote "Foundation of Single Crstal Silicon Fibers" in 1954, "The Etching of a Germanium Substrates in Gaseous Hydrogen Cholride" in 1963, "Cleanliness and the Cleaning of Silicon Wafers in 1976, "Practical Limiting Efficiencies for Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells" in 1983 and "rice Hulls as a Raw Material for Producing Silicon" in 1984.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Amick has been active as a leader in his community. A fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, he is a member of the American Chemical Society and Sigma Xi. He has also been affiliated with the New York professional chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma, a past master of the Masons and he has been a member of the Princeton Independent Consultants since 1993. At the Electrochemical Society, he held a multitude of positions including chairman of the nominating committee, vice president of the board of directors, member of the Honors and Awards Committee and chairman, vice chairman and treasurer of the Dielectrics and Insulation Division. A civically-minded professional, Dr. Amick has volunteered in his field and community. He served as a volunteer at Learning Ally, a volunteer math tutor at the Trenton, New Jersey After School Program and as a member of the board of directors of Princeton Braillists.
Since retiring, he has been an active volunteer with several non-profit organizations: From 1993 to 2016 he was a reader of scientific textbooks for Learning Ally, (formerly Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic), serving as a member of the board of the Princeton Unit from 1995 to 2003 and as Chairman of that board from 1998-2001. From 1993 to 2016, he tutored elementary school students at the Trenton After School Program, where he was a member of the board of directors from 1996 to 2002. From 2010 to 2016 he served as Secretary-Treasurer for his wife's all-volunteer non-profit organization "The Princeton Braillists". Since 2018, he has been a "Grandpal" helping young pupils in the Princeton elementary schools acquire reading skills.
Dr. Amick has been recognized with a number of awards and accolades throughout his career. He was named an Ethyl Corporate Fellow of Princeton University, a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society, Inc. He has received awards and accolades for his accomplishments and achievements. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Frontiers of Science and Technology, American Men and Women in Science and Leaders in American Science.
