Now retired, Mr. Opre excelled as an editor and film company executive for nearly 30 years. The editor-at-large with Outdoor Life from 1981 to 1993, he previously served as the editorial director for the Great Lakes Sportsman magazine between 1972 and 1975. Other appointments include working as a field editor for the Midwest Division of Field & Stream, becoming president of Tom Opre Productions, and contributing as the outdoor editor of the Detroit Free Press between 1966 and 2004. In addition, he served as the president of TOP Safaris, Inc., between 1986 and 2004. Mr. Opre initially began his career as a sports and outdoors writer for the Decatur Herald & Review from 1965 and 1966.
A graduate of Indiana University, Mr. Opre earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism in 1965. To remain knowledgeable of changes in the industry, he maintains professional alignment with the Outdoor Writers Association of America, the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers and the Michigan Outdoor Writers Association. Utilizing his skill set, Mr. Opre has contributed articles on the topics of outdoor and traveling to countless professional journals.
For his accomplishments in the field, Mr. Opre has been the recipient of James Henshall Award from the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association, the Teddy Award from the International Festival of Outdoor Films, the Environmental Award from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Writer's Award from Safari Club International, among others. Likewise, he has been selected for inclusion in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World. Enjoying his retirement, Mr. Opre likes to hunt and fish during his spare time.
