Dr. Lucier began her professional education by completing a Bachelor of Arts at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, in 1961. She was encouraged by her mentor, Dr. Ronald E. Santoni, to apply to graduate school, even though she feared she could not afford it. She applied and was offered a full National Defense Education Act fellowship at the University of Maryland in College Park, where Dr. Moreland Perkins and Dr. John W. Yolton, became her major advisors. While completing her doctoral dissertation on Critical Realism, she was hired as an Instructor and then as Assistant Professor at Northern Arizona University in 1967-1969, and, upon completion of her degree in 1973, accepted a position at Bennett College in Greensboro. At Bennett, she assisted with the development of an innovative Interdisciplinary Studies Program, was appointed to the rank of full Professor of Philosophy in 1980, and in 1993 was officially recognized by the Bennett College National Alumnae Association for Teaching Excellence and Dedicated Service to Bennett College. Today she continues to serve as the Coordinator of the colleges' Interdisciplinary Studies Traditional Option Program.
Following her commitment to international philosophical discourse, Dr. Lucier was first elected President of the American Society for Value Inquiry in 1992, and then, in that capacity, assisted in founding the International Society for Value Inquiry. During her leadership as Secretary/Treasurer, in the latter society (which brings together Philosophers from over 26 countries), she continues to advocate for freedom of thought and attention to ethical values.
