Dr. Brinker is a research professor of organic chemistry at the State University of New York at Binghamton (Binghamton University) where he began in 1988 as a full professor of chemistry and became the chairman of the Department of Chemistry in 1992. As the first of his family to obtain a PhD, he believes he was born to be a chemist. He served as Professor Ordinarius of organic chemistry for the University of Vienna in Austria from 1996 to 2011. He was also a visiting professor at the Max-Planck Institute for Coal Research in Germany in 1995 and 1996. Earlier, he was a professor, privatdozent and research assistant at Ruhr-University Bochum in Germany from 1976 to 1988. To find a new and inspiring environment, he took the position of postdoctoral research fellow with the Chemistry Department at the University of Florida (1973-1975).
Dr. Brinker earned a Diplom Chemiker degree (Master of Science) in chemistry from the University of Cologne in Germany in 1971. Subsequently, he was awarded a Doctor of Natural Sciences from his alma mater in 1973. He retains professional association with the American, Austrian and German Chemical Societies and the Royal Society of Chemistry. Throughout his career, he has contributed his knowledge to creative works including "Advances in Carbene Chemistry" (3 Volumes) and "Molecular Encapsulation: Organic Reactions in Constrained Systems." He has approximately 160 scientific publications to his credit and has given worldwide approximately 200 presentations of his research findings at universities and chemical companies. He was an editor, and is an advisor, and educational board member for three chemistry journals.
Dr. Brinker has been recognized for his professional accomplishments on many occasions. In addition to receiving a graduate fellowship through the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany between 1971 and 1973, he obtained fellowships through the Fulbright-Hays Program and the University of Florida, as well as a feature in the 26th edition of Who's Who in the East in 1996.
