Dr. Donald W. Krummel has been at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign since 1970.

Dr. Krummel has been at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign since 1970. He became Professor Emeritus in 1997, but continued to teach his bibliography class until 2015. Earlier, he was honored as an associate in the Center for Advanced Study, University Scholar, and Centennial Scholar of the library school. Previously he was Instructor in Music Literature at the University of Michigan, 1954-56; at the Library of Congress, as Reference Librarian in Music and in other positions, including Civil Service Middle Management Intern, 1956-61; and at the Newberry Library in Chicago, 1962-69, managing library operations as Associate Librarian, these being the most important and rewarding years in his career. He was also on the faculty of the Rare Book School (Columbia University, University of Virginia), 1990-2008.
His education at the University of Michigan began in music (B.Mus., 1951; M.Mus., 1953). There the music Dean and Assistant Dean gave him wise advice: study for degrees for a library career (A.M.L.S., 1954, and Ph.D. 1958). He has been active in the American Library Association (Councilor, 1964-68), Music Library Association (President, 1981-83), Bibliographical Society of America, the Bibliographical Society (London), American Antiquarian Society, Society for American Music, American Printing Historical Association, Caxton Club (Chicago), and Grolier Club (New York). He has also been a Guggenheim Fellow and received awards from the Aspen Institute and the Huntington Library, among others.
His books include A Guide for Dating Early Published Music (1975), English Music Printing, 1553-1700 (1975), Resources of American Music History (1981), Bibliographical Handbook of American Music (1987), the New Grove Dictionary on Music Printing and Publishing (1990), and The Literature of Music Bibliography (1992); in library history, Fiat lux, fiat latebra (1999); also Bibliographies, Their Aims and Methods (1984) and The Anatomy of Bibliography (forthcoming).
