Mr. Scholem began his 45-year career in broadcasting as an announcer and disc jockey at various stations throughout Ohio. During his time in Ohio, he attended Bowling Green State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts in 1953. After graduation, he became the sports director of station KLOU in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he remained through 1955. Following this opportunity, Mr. Scholem acted as a sales representative for station KGBC in Galveston, Texas, from 1955 to 1957.
Relocating to New York, Mr. Scholem became the vice president of Greater Media Inc. on Long Island, where he served from 1967 to 1994. Between 1967 and 1999, he was also a theater critic with National Public Radio, Greater New York Radio and Radio Long Island. Extending his talents to food criticism as well, he served as a restaurant reviewer and columnist for The New York Times between 1990 and 2004. In 2018, Mr. Scholem began reviewing restaurants for the Long Island Restaurant News.
Mr. Scholem has been the recipient of numerous awards for his work in broadcasting and journalism, including a Special Citation for Distinguished Editorial Writing from the United Press International in 1974 and the Outstanding Editorial Award from the New York State Broadcasters Association every year from 1976 to 1989. Furthermore, he has received the Excellence in Broadcast Journalism Award from the Long Island Coalition for Fair Broadcasting Inc. a grand total of four times between 1982 and 1989. Mr. Scholem has also been incredibly active in his community, serving on the board of directors for the Suffolk Family Service League, the Suffolk Community Council and the Huntington Arts Council.
