With more than 40 years of experience in the field of fiber optic sensors, Mr. Udd has become an authority in his industry and currently serves as the president of Columbia Gorge Research. Holding his role since 2006, he began his career as an engineer/scientist, unit chief, Manager and finally Senior Staff Manager-MDC Fellow at McDonnell Douglas, now part of The Boeing Co., from 1977 to 1993. Joining Blue Road Research Inc. as the president from 1993 to 2003, he became vice president of technology from 2003 to 2005. Furthermore, Mr. Udd has chaired 39 international conferences on fiber sensors and lecturers across the country.
Prior to becoming an esteemed engineer, Mr. Udd pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1973 and a Master of Science in engineering from Princeton University in New Jersey in 1978. Over the years, he was mentored by his father, John Edward Udd; his high school math teacher, Daniel Hildebrandt; and his supervisor at McDonnel Douglas, Richard Cahill. In order to keep abreast of developments in his field, Mr. Udd maintains affiliation with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, The Optical Society of America, and SPIE-The International Optics and Photonics Society.
An expert in his field, Mr. Udd has invented and developed fiber sensors for guidance and control of aircraft and spacecraft. He also invented, designed and developed a wide range of fiber optic sensors to support civil structure, medical, oil and gas, electric power, manufacturing and environmental monitoring applications. As a result, he authored and edited a number of books including the first and second editions of "Fiber Optic Sensors: An Introduction for Engineers and Scientists," "Fiber Optic Smart Structures," "Field Guide to Fiber Optic Sensors," and "Design and Development of Fiber Gyros."
Apart from his career, Mr. Udd has volunteered in his field and community as well. He served on the board of directors of SPIE, as the president of the Columbia Section of the Optical Society and the board of the McDonnell Douglas Foundation for Southern California. Happily married to his wife, Holly, for many years, he is also the proud father of two daughters, Emelia and Ingrid. In his free time, Mr. Udd enjoys astronomy, writing and running.
In light of his many achievements in the field, Mr. Udd has received a number of awards and accolades throughout his career. Notably, he was presented with the David Richardson Medal in applied optics by the Optical Society in 2009. He was also elected to the position of Fellow by McDonnell Douglas in 1987, SPIE in 1989 and the Optical Society in 2010. For excellence throughout his career, Mr. Udd has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
