Dr. Garber is the A. Watson Armour III University Professor of Philosophy at Princeton University. He joined the prestigious faculty in 2002. An associate member of the Program in History of Science and the Politics Department, his principal interests include the relations between philosophy, science and society in the period of the Scientific Revolution. Prior to his tenure at Princeton University, he taught philosophy at the University of Chicago from 1975 to 2002. While there he served terms as chair of the Department of Philosophy and the Committee on the Conceptual Foundations of Science, and as the Associate Provost for Research and Education.

Dr. Garber is the author of the 1992 book "Descartes' Metaphysical Physics," the 2000 book "Descartes Embodied" and the 2009 book "Leibniz: Body, Substance, Monad." Dr. Garber was a co-translator and co-editor for "Leibniz: Philosophical Essays" in 1989, co-editor for "Cambridge History of 17th Century Philosophy" in 1998 and editor-in-chief for a new edition of the works of the seminal 17th century thinker Jacobus Fontialis. He has also contributed multiple chapters to books and articles to peer reviewed journals. He is the former co-editor of the Oxford Studies in Early Modern Philosophy and the chair of the board of the Journal of the American Philosophical Association, and sits on the boards of many journals and book series.
A Harvard University graduate, Dr. Garber earned a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts in philosophy and PhD in philosophy between 1971 and 1975. He also received a Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Bucharest in 2012. Named to the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars in 2012, Dr. Garber has also been involved as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Association, the British Society for the History of Philosophy, the Society for the History of the Philosophy of Science and the Centre d'Etudes Cartesiennes at the University of Paris-IV. In addition to his memberships, he has been active with numerous committees and boards, such as the international board of the Research Center for the Foundations of Early Modem Thought at the University of Bucharest.
Dr. Garber has received multiple grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation between 1987 and 2010, a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies from 1985 to 1986 and a Guggenheim fellowship in 2016. He was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton in 1985-86, and the Institut d'études avancées de Paris in 2017-18. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in approximately 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
