Retired as a professor and dean emeritus since 1998, Dr. Epp excelled as an educator for nearly 40 years. Prior to this appointment, he served at Case Western Reserve University in a 30-year tenure, beginning as an associate religion professor in 1968. As he advanced with the renowned institution, he held the posts of a religion professor, the Harkness Professor of Biblical Literature, the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the chairman of the Department of Religion. Earlier in his career, he contributed to the Graduate School of Religion at the University of Southern California as an assistant professor of religion, an associate professor, and an associate professor of classics between 1962 and 1968. Dr. Epp was associated with the Princeton Theological Seminary as a special research assistant and the Drew Theological School at Drew University as a visiting instructor from 1961 to 1962.
Other professional endeavors to Dr. Epp's credit include working as a religious lecturer and visiting professor (nine years during 2001 – 2018) at the Harvard Divinity School and offering endowed lectures at Wellesley College, Duke University and Case Western Reserve University. A past panelist for the National Endowment for the Humanities, he found success as a Consultant-Evaluator for the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. Additionally, he dedicated his time and resources as a member of the International Greek New Testament Project as well as on the board of directors for the New Testament Contextion Project. Civically, Dr. Epp has volunteered as an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and on the Board of Managers for Saint Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Los Angeles.
A pronounced voice in the industry, Dr. Epp's written works include The Theological Tendency of Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis in Acts in 1966, Perspectives on New Testament Textual Criticism: Collected Essays, 1962-2004 in 2005, and Junia: The First Woman Apostle in 2005 and some sixty technical articles. He had also maintained his involvement as the co-editor for several publications, such as New Testament Textual Criticism: Its Significance for Exegesis, The New Testament and Its Modern Interpreters and "New Testament Tools, Studies, and Documents." Since 1966, he has been on the Editorial Board of Hermeneia, a commentary on the Bible in fifty-plus volumes. For his accomplishments in the field, he was recognized as a Guggenheim fellow, a Rockefeller Doctoral fellow in religion, a and a postdoctoral fellow of the Claremont Graduate School and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and in 2003 was president of the international Society of Biblical Literature. In addition, Dr. Epp was the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Dr. Epp pursued a formal education at Wheaton College, earning a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1952. Three years later, he obtained a Bachelor of Divinity, magna cum laude, from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1955. He continued his academic efforts by graduating with a Master of Sacred Theology from Harvard University in 1956. Soon thereafter, Dr. Epp concluded his pursuits with a Doctor of Philosophy in history and philosophy of religion from the aforementioned university in 1961. Recently Dr. Epp's private library containing some 4,500 books, with numerous rare volumes treating ancient Greek and Latin manuscripts, became a "Special Collection" at Baylor University. Its oldest book is dated 1545.
