Estherina Shems, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Estherina Shems decided to focus her studies on psychiatry, as she believed that it was one of the fields of medicine that concentrated on the whole person.

Dr. Shems retired from a long and successful career in mental healthcare and academia, which she began as a child psychiatry affiliate at the Child Study Center in Philadelphia in 1961. Since that time, she has taught in the department of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Irving Schwartz Institute for Children and Youth. She also held various staff and administrative positions at the Philadelphia Psychiatric Center and the Irving Schwartz Institute for Children and Youth. A former clinical associate in psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Shems served as a consultant to early intervention programs for the Community Council for MH/MR, Inc., also in Philadelphia.

Throughout her career, Dr. Shems accepted numerous consultant and teaching posts in the field, including as an invited lecturer at the Institute of Pediatrics in the Chinese Academy of Medical Science in Beijing, China. On a local level, she has excelled as the vice chairman of the Trust Fund of the Alumnae/Alumni Association of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Furthermore, Dr. Shems has served on the executive board of the Alumnae/Alumni Association of the Woman's Medical College.

An elected fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Shems was previously active as the vice president of the Medical Women's International Association for North America, where she held several other roles. She further contributed to the American Medical Women's Association, where she is a lifetime member, former member of the board of directors and of several committees and task forces. Dr. Shems is currently affiliated with the Psychiatric Physicians of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Psychiatric Society, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and several honor societies.

The recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges in 2002, Dr. Shems was presented with a Richard H. Thornton Award for Excellence in 1995 and the T. Gibson Hobbs Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Lynchburg in 1969, among other accolades. She has also been selected for inclusion in over two dozen editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the World. In 2009, Dr. Shems was additionally celebrated with an Honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Lynchburg.

Born in Tel Aviv, Dr. Shems grew up in a culture that considered females as less than first class. Knowing early on that she wanted to become a doctor, she never strayed from her passion for wanting to be more than she was told she could become. Relocating to the United States in 1950, she soon after earned a Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude, at the University of Lynchburg in 1954 and a Doctor of Medicine at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1958. She subsequently completed an internship at Lankenau Hospital and a fellowship in adult psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania between 1960 and 1963. Dr. Shems decided to focus her studies on psychiatry, as she believed that it was one of the fields of medicine that concentrated on the whole person.
