Supported by 45 years of professional excellence in education, Dr. Wooley has held the title of instructor emeritus and Cilley Professor of Greek emeritus with Phillips Exeter Academy since 2009, where he also was the first recipient of the Ryberg Teaching Award in 1976, was appointed the Academic Computer Coordinator from 1983 to 1988, the Bradbury Longfellow Cilley Professor of Greek in 1990, served as chair of the classics department from 1990 to 1996, and as instructor of Greek and Latin from 1968 to 2004. At the inception of his career, he gained valuable expertise through his work with Princeton University as a teaching assistant, Duke University as an instructor and assistant professor, and Gould Academy as chair of the classics department. In 1988 he was a faculty member at the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute at Bowdoin College. He also received the Classical Association of New England's Barlow-Beach Distinguished Service Award in 1999 after serving CANE as president, executive secretary for six years, and chair of the computer committee for many years. Later he was a coeditor of CANE's Centennial History in 2006.
Preparing for his profession, Allan Wooley earned a Bachelor of Arts from Bowdoin College, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Classical Philology from Princeton University. Additionally, he pursued postgraduate studies through the University of Hamburg in Germany. His main mentors in Classics were Julia Murphy at Stephen's High School, Norman Hatch at Phillips Exeter Academy, Nate Dane at Bowdoin College, Bruno Snell at the Universitat Hamburg, and George Duckworth and Gregory Vlastos (a dissertation advisor) at Princeton University. While he was the Coordinator of Academic Computing at PEA he earned certifications in DEC mini-frame programming from the Digital Equipment Corporation, Burlington, MA and in assembly programming from the Hesser extension near Portsmouth, NH.
In his spare time during retirement, he also contributed his time to his community by serving on the Morgan Town Planning Commission, Select Board, several local school committees, serving as a director on the board of the Seymour Lake Association, and as the original creator-manager of websites for both the town and SLA.
With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Mr. Wooley co-authored "Fabulae Graecae" and "Euripides' Helen" while still teaching, and in retirement authored "Crumbs Cast upon the Current" and "The Curmudgeon's Quests." He has also given many talks at professional conferences and contributed many articles to professional publications, holds multiple copyrights for computer programs, and has recently authored 28 essays so far on his blog since 2017. The highlight of his career has been explaining on his own online sites as well as in articles and books his understanding of how Plato fused form and content, or style and ideas, within the context of his philosophy and his meta-philosophy.
