Stefan S. Anderson is retired chairman of First Merchants Corporation, a $10 billion regional banking company headquartered in Muncie Indiana. He served as its CEO from 1979-1999, a period in which the company recorded 20 consecutive years of earnings growth. He served as Board Chairman until 2005. He began his banking career in 1960 with the American National Bank of Chicago, where he was named executive vice president in 1970. Anderson served on the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago from 1992-1998.

Anderson is Chairman of the George and Frances Ball Foundation, Chairman of the Crossroads Foundation BSA, a director and Vice President of the Zeigler Foundation, and a director of the IU Health BMH Foundation and serves as a Trustee of the Indiana State Museum. He is an emeritus trustee and past chairman of Minnetrista, a Life Trustee and past chairman of the Indiana Nature Conservancy.

He is a past chair of the Ball State University Foundation. Anderson chaired Ball State's first capital campaign in the 1980s, Wings for the Future. He was one of the founders of the BSU Business Roundtable and the Miller College of Business Executive Advisory Board and served as the first chairman of each organization. He is a former trustee of Roosevelt University in Chicago and a past director of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the Muncie Delaware Chamber.

In Muncie, he was one of the organizers of the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County and served as its chairman from 1996 to 1998. In 2000, he chaired a community committee that was awarded a $5,000,000 Lilly Endowment grant for education and served as the first chairman of The Community Alliance to Promote Education (CAPE). He served as chair and director of the Delaware Advancement Corporation when the Horizon Convention Center was developed. One of the founding directors of the Innovation Connector, a new business incubator in Muncie, he continues service there as a Director emeritus.

He has also served as director of Public Radio Capital, Tech Point, and as advisory director of Indiana Public Radio, Motivate Our Minds and the Cornerstone Center. During his years in Muncie he has served as the chairperson or president of United Way, the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, and Rotary.

An Eagle Scout, he was given the Distinguished Eagle Award by the National Council of Boy Scouts of America in 1995. Anderson was the Muncie Star Press "Citizen of the Year" in 2002 and received the Muncie/Delaware County VIVA Lifetime Achievement award in 2008. Other recognitions have included the Paul Samuelson Award from the Indiana Council of Economic Education (1994), the Martin Luther King Service Award by the Coalition of Concerned Clergy (1993), the Tech Point Bridge Builder award (2006), the BSU Business "Hall of Fame" (1996) and the Ruth Freund award from Motivate Our Minds (2004), the Silver Beaver Award from Boy Scouts of America (2017) He is a member of the Indiana Academy.

Mr. Anderson was born in Madison, Wisconsin, received his BA degree from Harvard in 1956, where he earned Phi Beta Kappa recognition, and his MBA from the University of Chicago in 1960. He received an honorary doctorate degree from Ball State University in 1993.
