Dr. Gimmestad's formal education led to three academic degrees: Bachelor of Arts from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN in 1954, Master of Arts from Middlebury College in Vermont in 1965, and Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Michigan in 1972. She had earlier absorbed essential lessons about work and what it takes to get it done from her parents, Ben and Agnes Gimmestad. Her father was the editor and publisher of a small town newspaper, the Dawson Sentinel. He was also the paper's reporter and printer. Her mother managed finances, wrote the local news column, ran the presses and also maintained a comfortable home for her family. They never missed a deadline.
Prior to her career in finance, Dr. Gimmestad taught English at the high school level in Minnesota and California from 1954 to 1968 and served as an assistant professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1971 to 1975. She is also a published author, having written "The Lamplighter: An Introduction to Emily Dickinson" in 1972, and co-authored, with Asher Rivlin, "Poetry Unfolding" in 1975.
Having accomplished much over the course of her career, Dr. Gimmestad feels that her contributions to the successes of her students in school and beyond were the major highlights of her teaching career. As a financial planner,and investment advisor, she is also pleased that her work has contributed to a financially comfortable retirement for her longtime clients. In her leisure time, Dr. Gimmestad enjoys reading and playing bridge.
